Summer Gardening Tips Three top tips for your July garden Keep Cool! On the hottest days of July greenhouses should be given plenty of extra ventilation, even to the point of keeping the windows open and doors ajar. The best time for watering greenhouse plants is first thing in the morning. You might also want to sprinkle the floor with water to help create humidity in the atmosphere. Cut It Out! You don’t need to go all Edward Scissorhands but July is the perfect time for a spot of deadheading and judicious flower cutting. Right now we’re seeing lots of lovely flowers in rockeries and borders ready to be cut – and they can also be used to create beautiful flower arrangements for the home. Sweet peas, meanwhile, can be picked almost every day; however, be sure to water the plants generously as this will help promote future flowering. Grow Food! Rising food prices are another very good reason why so many of us are enjoying growing our own fruit and veg in the garden. July is the month to sow many delicious products, including salad leaves, lettuce, cabbages, and French beans. The warm summer sunshine helps their seeds to germinate quicker so don’t be bashful about how much water you give your new, quick-growing harvest.
