Celebrating 50 Years of the Woodland Trust Congratulations to the Woodland Trust as they celebrate their Golden Anniversary. From an acorn of an idea, conceived around a kitchen table in 1972, the Trust have grown to become a nationwide organisation. In the space of five decades they have planted 55 million trees, restored 85,000 acres of damaged woodland, own more than 1000 woods across the UK and, last but certainly not least, have brought onboard more than 300,000 members. Greenbelt, too, have been busy for more than 25 years, planting trees and looking after mature woodlands across the UK. We regularly monitor the health of both amenity trees and large woodlands, carrying out any remedial or emergency work needed. Ancient woodlands make up a large part of Greenbelt’s portfolio. Working with the Woodland Trust, one of our best known sites is Glenrothes Woodlands. This encompasses more than 213 hectares and is composed of 68 smaller individual woodland compartments. The ancient woodlands from which our Burton Woods development takes its name date back to the Seventeenth Century. This challenging and historic ecosystem is managed under the recommendations set out in our Annual Tree and Woodland Audit, prepared by an independent arboricultural consultant and tree inspector. We also work with groups such as the RSPB to maintain protected habitats. For example, at The Buntings in Dawlish, South Devon, our wild and amenity grass, abundant hedgerows and young and mature woodland, provide the perfect environment for endangered Cirl Buntings to thrive. Looking to the future, we fully support the Woodland Trust’s vision for a world where “woods and trees thrive for people and nature”. To find out more, why not watch the Trust’s video here?
