Are you ready for Biodiversity Gain? New legislation on Biodiversity Gain, previously referred to as Biodiversity Net Gain, is set to roll out in England. Essentially, ‘Gain’ is an overall increase in the variation of species present in an ecosystem, leading to a healthier and more diverse food chain. It is aimed at securing a sustainable future for all and warding off doomsday scenarios of ecological collapse. The draft legislation, subject to much consultation over the past few years, makes Biodiversity Gain and habitat provision a key part of future planning conditions for new-build housing developments. With our experience and expertise in sustainable land stewardship, Greenbelt already work closely with housebuilders and local authority planning departments in creating, promoting and preserving Biodiversity Gain in public open spaces. Being Green By Nature, we also provide stewardship on a number of protected habitats, designated nature areas and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Some are home to a range of rare and protected species, such as the gadwall duck, great crested newt and cirl bunting. With bespoke maintenance programmes, as well as detailed annual inspections of woodlands and SUDS, our in-house experts are well-versed in the issues surrounding Biodiversity Gain – and well-placed to get ahead of impending legislation. Government guidance describes Biodiversity Gain as “an approach which aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than beforehand”. That, too, is our mission and Greenbelt are ready to act now. . . are you? Previous article: National Day of Reflection Prev Next article: "Super-plant" Beats Traffic Emissions Next
