Biodiverse SuDS protect our planet and our pockets A ‘future flood map’ of the UK, simulating the impact of flooding due to climate change, has revealed the annual cost of flood damage could rise by more than 20% this century. According to the Association of British Insurers the annual bill for damage across the UK already stands at £700 million. Even if global climate change pledges are met – maintaining any temperature increase to 1.8C – locations such as south-east and north-west England and south Wales are set to experience significantly increased flooding. The research team from Bristol University and Fathom, a firm that assesses flood and climate risks, simulated all types of flooding in the coming decades. They used data about river flow, terrain, rainfall patterns, sea levels and Met Office climate predictions to create a detailed picture of how much flood damage there would be to homes and businesses across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The good news is Greenbelt takes the threat of potential flooding very seriously. This is why hundreds of our newbuild developments incorporate Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). These are one of the most effective and natural ways of defending homes from flooding – and, as a result, preventing insurance premiums from spiking. For the past decade Greenbelt has been a pioneer in the management and maintenance of SuDS – in a long-standing strategic partnership, our in-house experts work with Abertay University Urban Water Technology Centre to ensure world-leading training and best practice. We undertake 3,000 inspections every year on more than 250 SuDS and are proud to be industry leaders in the management of these important features. Our care and attention mean the special SuDS habitats also help to promote the vital biodiversity of local flora and fauna.
