Greenbelt SuDS Provide Protection With the threat of potential flooding now highlighted across the UK, many Greenbelt customers will be kept safe by their developments’ sustainable flood defences. Our Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are one of the most effective ways of helping defend homes from flooding. This is why we have been proactive in managing SuDS on hundreds of developments. In fact, since 2002 we have been a leading pioneer in the management and maintenance of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) in new build developments. In a long-standing strategic partnership, our in-house experts work closely with Abertay University Urban Water Technology Centre to ensure world-leading training and best practice. We undertake 3,000 inspections annually on more than 250 SUDS and are proud to be industry leaders in the management of these important flood mitigation and environment-enhancing features. Putting an emphasis on infrastructure such as SuDS helps serve everyone’s best interests. Not only do they help protect homes, they can also help save on annual insurance premiums. Greenbelt’s care and attention mean the special SuDS habitats can also help to promote the biodiversity of local flora and fauna. HOW SuDS WORKSuDS are systems of interconnected ponds, swales, basins and zones of specialised vegetation providing temporary storage of the excess rainwater. They efficiently intercept and retain excess rainfall before releasing it back into local waterways, which is done at a limited rate to prevent flooding. SuDS can retain more water than traditional pipe systems and discharge it at a predefined rate – meaning that local watercourses can easily cope with the system's water output all year round. Because of their ecological composition, SuDS are very green: a degree of natural filtration occurs while the water is retained, meaning a proportion of the run-off is negated and water departing the system arrives in streams and rivers all the cleaner for it.
