Located in Lanarkshire, West Central Scotland, this 1000-home development is on a former coal mine and an area of great historical significance. The Udston mining disaster occurred here in May 1887, in which 73 miners died in an explosion at Udston Colliery; said to be Scotland’s second-worst mining disaster to date.
Today, a statue of a dancing miner commemorates those who were lost. Greenbelt adopted this work of art along with the rest of the development, and we’re delighted to help protect the rich history of the site and community.
Hamilton West is also home to beautiful ravines, whose careful and regular maintenance not only preserves the existing geography, but also safeguards local homes from flood risk.
Prior to accessing the development, we worked closely with the planning authority to ensure these natural features are not lost. Road bridges were built and residential phases designed around them - meaning these wonderful gorges with their tumbling water features are proudly managed, maintained and protected by Greenbelt.
Working in tandem with the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems on-site, which receive regular inspections and annual desilting works, the ravines form part of a naturalistic flood prevention system, driving down both risk and insurance costs to our customers living in the area.
Greenbelt began adopting the public open spaces in 2015 with presently around two thirds of the areas under our homeowner- funded mechanism. House building remains ongoing. We were successfully appointed to prepare detailed landscape plans for Phase 2 of the development and all the design work was carried out in-house. We were then appointed to implement and manage these areas.
