Greenbelt

going wild for suds

Greenbelt is one of the leading organisations in the UK to promote and manage SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems).

We have been at the forefront of this for many years, supported by the leading academic centre for research and consultancy in SUDS, the University of Abertay Dundee.

But it's not just the built environment or new housing developments that benefit from SUDS – it seems that all forms of wildlife are thriving on them! All across the country we have received reports and photos of an amazing number of breeding swans, ducks and wildfowl, not to mention rabbits, squirrels, and deer enjoying the landscapes that we manage and maintain. We have even obtained evidence of one SUDDS pond being stocked with fish by a particularly keen resident!

One serious side to this is that we have to extra careful how we maintain these areas during the breeding season. Swans in particular do not like being disturbed, and of course they are protected. We take this into account, and are pleased to say that there have been no incidents of our contractors causing breeding to be disturbed, and our customers have been very understanding.

Here are a few examples of photos from around the country – if you have examples of your own, please send them to us and we can put them on our website. Our thanks to Kinnaird Primary School at Larbert for the photos of the swans in the SUDS pond near their school.
