How to create the perfect Hallowe'en pumpkin

No self-respecting Hallowe’en party is complete without a super-scary jack o’ lantern pumpkin.

So to get you ready for next week’s big night, here’s our easy guide to creating the perfect pumpkin for guests and trick-or-treaters.

First, choose a large pumpkin and use a sharp, serrated knife to cut off its crown.

Be sure to angle the blade towards the centre of the pumpkin – this will create a ledge that supports the lid.

Using a large serving spoon or ice-cream scoop, remove all of the seeds and fibres (remember that roasted pumpkin seeds make a wonderful healthy snack!) then remove some of the flesh – the pumpkin wall should be left about one inch thick

With a marker pen, draw a simple outline of a face on the pumpkin then, using a smaller serrated knife, cut out the eyes, nose and mouth.

Safety first! Always cut away from you in case the knife slips.

Now simply pop a tea light inside the pumpkin, light it and replace the crown.

And a final top tip: if smoke from the candle begins to blacken the pumpkin, cut a hole in the lid to let the smoke and heat escape.

We hope you have a happy Hallowe’en!
